Kenya gears up for ePassports

29 October 2009

Kenya’s Immigration Minister, Otieno Kajwang, has confirmed that the country’s ePassport and eVisa border management system is waiting cabinet approval before rollout of the project begins next July.

Online visa applications are also rumoured to be in the pipeline.

According to local reports, immigration offices will be opened in Washington and London by January. Passport processing centres will also be hosted in three locations across the country.

The government is also taking steps to improve identification processes throughout the country by making it mandatory for all children joining school to have birth certificates.

The population registration network is being increased via an Integrated Population Registration System.
