Indonesia launches new biometric screening system at borders

Indonesia's immigration department yesterday rolled out a new biometric system to screen visitors arriving at 27 of its air and sea ports. Facial images and fingerprints will be captured to verify the identity of travellers, according to a press release by air transport firm Sita, which is installing the systems.

"We can now be confident that people match passports," said Mr Erwin Azis, director of Information Systems at the immigration department, or Imigrasi.

The system has been put in place at the Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta, and will be installed at the remaining ports by June.

New technology making fake IDs harder to spot

For Kevin, a journalism freshman, money and free access to liquor were the driving forces that propelled him into the underground world of producing fake IDs when he was 17.

While most card makers get into the business for extra cash, he charged just $25 so he could have a steady, low-key source of income while he was still in high school.

Kevin, who declined to give his full name for fear of retribution, stayed at his workplace, which had an ID card printer, after closing to print the fake IDs.

UK Police Engage Print Industry to Stop Fake IDs

U.K. police are trying to get wider participation from printer manufacturers and makers of specialist equipment in a voluntary program designed to cut off criminals from the tools they need to make fraudulent passports and ID cards.
The program asks distributors and resellers to profile their customers and tell police if they suspect equipment such as thermal card printers are being ordered under suspicious conditions, said Nick Downing, detective chief inspector with the Economic and Specialist Crime Unit of the Metropolitan police.

There are no regulations around owning special printing equipment, but it is illegal to possess some items with the intent to produce false identity documents. The tools of the trade include embossing devices, hot-foil stamping machines, special types of paper and hologram machinery. Thermal card printers, which can be used to make ID cards, retail for as little as £700 (US$1,120), Downing said.

New ID system installed for Spring Festival trains

GUANGZHOU: People returning home for Spring Festival can expect lengthy delays at train stations after the introduction of a new ID-based ticket booking system.

The Ministry of Railways announced that passengers would have to show their ID card or other recognized identity document when buying a train ticket at 37 railway stations in Guangdong, Sichuan, Hunan and Guizhou provinces.

The system will be effective between Jan 30 and Feb 13.

Spring Festival, or the Lunar Chinese New Year holiday, starts on Feb 14. Scalpers have traditionally used this holiday to stockpile tickets and sell them at much higher prices.

The stations covered by the new system and managed by Guangzhou Railway Group include seven in Guangdong and 19 in the neighboring Hunan.

The Guangzhou Railway Group said the new system would greatly increase the difficulty in organizing transport and become a challenge to Spring Festival railway transport.

Travelers are urged to use the latest version of their ID card to speed up the checking process.

DMV begins issuing Advance Secure Issuance Licenses and ID Cards

As of this past Monday, Jan. 11, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles in Carson City has begun issuing Advanced Secure Issuance (ASI) licenses and ID cards.

ASI is a new license or ID card marked with a gold star indicating it meets federal identification standards for boarding commercial aircraft and entering federal buildings where identification is required, and the DMV will also begin issuing those licenses and/or ID cards on Feb. 1 in Reno, and eventually statewide

Because the Department has met the first 18 bench marks of the federal Real ID Act, the licenses and ID cards Nevadans currently possess will be good for federal purposes for several years.

As a result, the Department recommends that motorists wait until their normal renewal date in the years ahead before applying for an ASI card.

The documents required to prove identity for an ASI card are the same documents Nevada already requires for first-time licensees and new residents. The difference is that DMV will be accepting only those documents it can electronically verify, and the only additional information required for an ASI card is utility bills or phone bills to prove residency.
